“More litigation, more litigation, more litigation.”
On December 11th, MCV Law Partner Gary J. Valerino participated in a committee meeting held by the City of Syracuse Common Council to examine the current status of Landlord-Tenant Law in the area and the potential implications of passing Good Cause Eviction Law, which is currently under consideration at the local level.
Mr. Valerino noted that Landlord-Tenant Law in Syracuse is already complex, and cautioned that implementing Good Cause Eviction Law would only add more layers of regulation and litigation to eviction cases, hinder property owners’ ability to obtain loans from financial institutions, and ultimately have a negative impact on the Landlord-Tenant dynamic in the Syracuse community.
One councilor expressed concern that further overregulation of the eviction process could drive landlord investment away from the area, and observed that a lack of investment in upgrades to residential properties is already leading to worsened living conditions for tenants and a continual strain on city resources such as the fire department when serious issues arise at deteriorating properties.
