When a worker is seriously injured or permanently disabled on the job, the impact reaches far beyond lost wages and medical treatment. Families are often forced to rethink their future plans, including how they will afford a college education for themselves or their children.
That’s why MCV Law is proud to help share and support the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial (TSFFM) Scholarship, a program dedicated to assisting injured workers and their families with the cost of higher education.
Honoring a Legacy of Worker Protection
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 was one of the deadliest workplace tragedies in U.S. history. The fire exposed unsafe working conditions and led directly to major labor and safety reforms, including the creation of New York’s Workers’ Compensation system.
More than a century later, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial continues that legacy by supporting workers and families who have been affected by serious work-related injuries or illnesses. Their scholarship program reflects the belief that workplace injuries should not prevent individuals or their children from pursuing higher education.
About the Scholarship
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial Scholarship provides $6,000 per academic year to eligible students. Scholarship funds are paid directly to the school and may be used for tuition or other qualifying educational expenses.
There is no fixed application deadline. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and awards are made throughout the year in coordination with academic calendars.
Who May Be Eligible to Apply
Applicants must meet both residency and enrollment requirements and fall into one of the qualifying categories below.
You may be eligible if you are:
- A New York State resident
- Enrolled in an accredited college or higher education program
- In good academic standing
And you are either:
- An injured worker receiving New York Workers’ Compensation benefits for permanent total disability, permanent partial disability, or another serious work-related injury that also resulted in Social Security Disability eligibility, or
- The child of a worker who meets the criteria above, including workers who were permanently disabled or lost their lives due to a work-related injury or illness
